Assignment #3

Posted in Assignments           41 Comments »

For this third and final blog post, I want you to tell me about one thing you want to do by the time you finish 7th grade and move on to highschool. In your post, make sure you include answers to the following questions:

- What is “the one” thing?

- Why is it so important?

- Do you think this is achievable?

- How will make sure you will reach this goal?

Your post should follow what a “quality comment” is and be at least 8 – 10 sentences in length (the more the better!).

You will then read 8 other posts by your classmates and reply to 3 of them. Your responses should include:

- Why you chose this person’s comment to respond to?

- Offer some supportive advice on how the person can reach their goal.

- Does it make you think of any other new goals you would like achieve (any transformations)?

Your reply should also follow what a “quality comment” is and be at least 6-8 sentences in length.

Mummified bodies in the crypt of the Capuchin monastery in Brno

Here is an interesting news article that I would like you to read.

http://teachingkidsnews.com/2011/10/27/the-first-mummy-in-3000-years/

Once you are finished, I want you to answer the following questions in post:

1) Why do you think Billis chose to have his body mummified?

2) Would you do the same thing and volunteer your body to be mummified? Why?

After you have posted your answer, read five other comments in the class and choose one to reply to.

*** Remember to post a quality comment and watch your spelling ***

How exciting, you’re almost ready to start! In our blogging unit, I have asked for you to start by commenting on a post that I have put up for each student to answer. Sometimes, it is hard to to think of and leave our own “quality comment” but i’m hoping with these examples, you will have a better idea and more practice to do so.

A Quality Comment is:

  • writing the comment in paragraph format (Opening sentence, Body sentences with details, and a Closing Sentence — remember your sandwiches)
  • using correct spelling, punctuation and spacing. This is not a text or tweet!
  • reading over the comment and editing before submitting
  • complimenting the writer in a specific way, asking a question, and / or adding new information to the post
  • writing a relevant comment that is related to the post
  • not revealing personal information about yourself
  • only write things that you would say to the nicest grandmother in the world

Remember —–everything is checked before we publish it to our blog

Examples of Good and Bad Comments:

GOOD —> “Reusing common household items for new tasks is a great way to save on waste. Things like old jars can be used to store button or keep pencils organized on a desk. I also believe recycling is a great way to save on waste, and just like how blogger j.d.davison said, I agree that this is one of the best ways to save our Earth from destruction.”

BAD —> “Hey j.d.davison. I thought your blog was cool and I liked it a lot but I still think recycling is lame…jk!”

It is really important for you to know a few things about blogging before we start as a class. Blogs are connected globally on the internet, so that means whatever you post on this blog, it is there for any public person to see. It is very crucial that we follow the following rules below when we are blogging so that we can keep ourselves safe and the blogging community happy as well.

When you contribute to this blog, you are agreeing to follow each of these rules:

  1. Keep your details private. NO personal information.                                                                                                                                                         Example: “Hi, I’m Jack and I live on 1234 Oak street in Vancouver, British Columbia”  ——> BAD!!!!!!!!
  2. Do not post information or pictures of others.
  3. Never use full names.
  4. Blogs are in a public space – be proud of anything that you write or post.

The Deep Question (A#1)

Posted in Assignments           60 Comments »

For your first response I want you to read this question carefully and really reflect on what it is asking you. Then type your response. Check your grammar and spelling (use the tools on this website!).

Once you are done, read at least 6 other posts by your classmates. Then choose one you really liked (or disliked) and comment on it with your own post.

Your Question:

” What is the most important thing in your life at this moment? Is it to do with family, friends, school, sports, games, etc? Describe why it is so important to you. Do you think that this thing will be as important to you when you are 30 years old? Why?”

Welcome to Blogging!

Posted in Uncategorized           No Comments »

Hello All the Grade 6SM students,

Here is the opportunity for you to get started on your blogging. Remember in class how we discussed why it is so useful for kids to blog and just think of all the great posts you get to share and see at this site!

For your first activity, I am going to post a deep question.

I want you to answer my question in a response post.

Make sure you are using proper spelling and grammar, this is not a text or tweet!

There is no word limit on what you are writing, so let it all out.

Then once you’re done posting, look at what other people have posted. Read through at least 6 posts and then comment on one of them with a short paragraph.

(For example, tell them if you liked what they said? Why? Does it make you think of something in particular? Did it change the way you think?)
